Welcome

Hello, my name is Dionne and I have been crafting for a very long time. As a very young child my mother tried to teach me to knit, it was a disaster. However, it must have sparked an interest in making things and, partly to prove that I was not totally useless and partly because I really wanted to make things, I taught myself to crochet. Over the years I have developed a love of cross stitch and all types of paper craft ..... I eventually even taught myself to knit.

I am married to a very understanding man, thank goodness, because I spend all my time either crafting, thinking about crafting or talking about crafting. I am hopeless at housework and dinner is often late!

Thank you for visiting my blog.

Basic Christmas Dress with Sweater

Day three of my personal Christmas in July Challenge.

For this challenge I have used Julie Williams 'Seasonal Dresses' and 'Seasonal Sweaters' for the basic pattern. Julie often gives her designs a name but these plain patterns are just called basic dress and sweater patterns. As you can imagine, I found displaying the clothes to show them at their best very hard but I have a little manikin ornament, which turned out to be just the right size to show off my miniature creations.

When I first started making these clothes for my niece's Christmas elves I just randomly picked some of Julie's patterns, I gave no thought to a Christmas theme or 'twinning' the dresses and jumpers - that idea came a few days later. However, once I came up with the idea I did go back to my earlier creations and try to make them look like a pair and, where there was no obvious winter theme I added beads and charms to give them a more 'seasonal' feel. I have tried to do this for the dress and jumper in today's post.

I have used Stylecraft Alpaka Tweed Double Knit for these two items,

I added the little bow and several Christmas charms to this dress to give a little Christmas cheer to this basic pink design,

and I added gold bugle beads and a wreath charm to the taupe jumper.

Each dress and jumper is fastened at the back by a small button.

I shall be back again tomorrow with another dress and sweater.  As I said before, I realise that this will soon become rather monotonous, after all there is only so much you can saw about a knitted dress and sweater and, as much as I love to read your comments, I will understand if you do not feel you have anything to say.

Frondy Frock and Jumper

Good morning

I am back today with day two of Christmas in July and, what I have come to think of my Elf Challenge.  (If you did not see my post yesterday you may find it helpful to check it out so you will know what I am am babbling about.)

When I first started making these clothes for my niece's elves I just picked random patterns, I gave no thought to matching dresses and jumpers - that came later.  However, once the idea came to me I tried to match those already made and, where there was no obvious winter theme, I added beads and charms to give them a more Christmassy feel.

I have used Julie Williams 'Seasonal Dresses' and 'Seasonal Sweaters' for the basic pattern for my elf clothes.  Julie gives all of her designs a name and this dress pattern is called 'Frondy Frock'.  The pattern was designed to fit the 'Little Cotton Rabbits' series but my nieces elves are slightly larger, so I made them in double knit rather than 4 ply.

The dress is knitted in two shades of blue doule knit.

I added the little snowflake charm to give a little Christmas cheer to the design.

The jumper, as you can see, is just plain royal blue with a snowflake charm - my crafty stash came in very handy for this project.

Each dress and jumper is fastened at the back by a tiny button.

I shall be back again tomorrow with another dress and sweater.  It occurs to  me that, with 24 posts, this could quickly become rather monotonous - after all there is only so much you can saw about a knitted dress and sweater and, as much as I love to read your comments, I will understand if you do not feel you have anything new to say.

Dressing up for Christmas

I am feeling very guilty about how long it has been since I was last here - I find it so hard to believe that I have not posted anything since 8 May, where does the time go?   Also, I must apologise if I have not visited your blog recently, I shall try to catch up soon.

However, I have not been taking it easy, I have, in fact, been wearing my little fingers out knitting.  I have several projects on the go at the moment and I have been working hard to get this one finished in time to share it with you throughout this month, it is my way of celebrating 'Christmas in July'!

Now, anyone who visits this space regularly will know that my nieces and nephews are all grown up and some even have families of their own.  I think that my sisters should be very proud of their children because they have all become wonderful, caring adults and I love them all of them dearly.  One of my nieces has an adorable little boy who has now been at school a few years - and he is doing very well.

Last Christmas my niece put their decorations up whilst he was at school.  When he came home he became very excited when he spotted two little elf ornaments she has put out.  You see, the other children at his school had been talking about their 'elves on a shelf' and he assumed that these were them.  They were, in fact, just ordinary ornaments but my niece played along by organising their nightly adventures.

A few nights later my niece arranged the 'boy' elf so it appeared that he was eating some of their Christmas treats.  In the morning her son became very upset when he saw the elf being naughty, in fact, he burst into tears.  After that every time one of the elves misbehaved he became very upset and my niece quickly realised that she would not be able to pose their elves in any mischievous tableaux.  As you my know, these elves have a reputation for getting into mischief and after this my niece found it more and more difficult to think of poses for their elves which put them in a good light.

Early in the New Year I had a call from my niece, she wanted to know whether I could knit a few outfits for her elves.  It was her idea that next Christmas the elves could be dressed differently each day, this would give them a different look each day.  I must admit that I found the idea of making 25 small dresses and 25 small jumpers more than a little daunting and I put the task off for a while, but at the end of April, I got out my patterns and started experimenting.

Two months later and here they are ..........

I was very keen to show you what I had been up to but I was worried that more than four dozen photos in one post was a little too much, even for me, but how should I set about sharing all of  my elf clothes?  It was then that the idea of Christmas in July occurred to me.  The plan I have come up with is to share a matching dress and sweater with you each day.  Most of the designs have a wintry theme but not all and, therefore, I suspect that anyone who does not read this post first will find themselves wondering why in subsequent posts I keep referring to Christmas in July.

Oh, I did had one more problem, I do not have the actual elves so how to display the clothes so you could see the details?  My solution was to use a little ornamental manikin which I have, it is very nearly the same size as the elves.

You may be interested to know that I have used Julie Williams basic  'Seasonal Dresses' and 'Seasonal Sweaters' patterns, some of the fair isle designs are by Julie Williams whilst others are by Suzymarie and, near the end, when I had run out of published winter themed patterns, there are even a couple designed by me!

These oiginal patterns were designed to fit the 'Little Cotton Rabbits' series but the elves are slightly larger, so I made their clothes in double knit instead of the recommended 4 ply.

If you have not come across the Little Cotton Rabbits and their friends I would urge you to pop across to Ravelry and take a look, they are all so sweet.

Hopefully I shall be back tomorrow with the first of my 'creations'.

Little Cream Outfit

Good morning, I hope you had a wonderful weekend.

A couple of weeks ago my husband came down with a bug, a nasty cold which turned into a chest infection, being a generous soul he shared it with me.  We are both totally fed up with this cough and cold now and we are looking forward to it going, however, my husband gave the wonderful news yesterday that the people he works with are complaining that after six weeks they are still coughing.  I am sure you can imagine how happy I am at this news!

Today I have another of my old projects to share with you.  I made this jacket with matching beanie and mittens for my tiny niece (well  not so tiny now as she is seven months old).

I bought this pattern from ebay, unfortunately it has no brand or number reference on it to identify it.  I made it in cream Double Knit yarn, so it is lovely and soft and cosy.

I am very unhappy with my attempts to photograph my knitted projects and if anyone out there has any tips on how I can show my knitting off better, I would be incredibly grateful to hear from you.

Have a lovely week.

Donovan Bear

I hope you are enjoying the long weekend.  This year, in the UK, the Bank Holidays are coming very close together at the moment, we have just had Easter and at the end of the month we shall have another.  You could be forgiven for thinking that we have a lot of  Bank Holidays (Public Holiday) in England but it is not so, after this month we have just three more this year one in August and then Christmas Day and Boxing Day (26 December).

I had a little time earlier today to put together another project to share with you.  You may recall Romeo, the fabulous Mary Jane's Tearoom bear I shared with you in March.  I was so delighted with how he turned out I decided to make one for my BFF's birthday.  She decided to called her bear Donovan.

Donovan and his clothes are made of beautifully soft 100% alpaca wool.  He is so soft and squidgy it is very heard to get him to sit or stand up (he isn't drunk, honest).

His body is made in grey with cream coloured socks.

I decided to try glass eyes for this bear, I thought it would give him a more traditional look.  However, it is difficult 'pull' the eyes into the head when they are made of glass.  Mind you, I think my nose stitching is getting better with every bear.

The turn down on his boots is lavender and I could not decide on the matching colourway for the jumper ie lavender with black and grey highlights or cream with lavender and grey highlights.  In the end I made both and left it to my friend to decide which she likes best.

Once again there is a small heart embroidered into one of his ears.

As you can see from this photo the design on the jumper is hearts and crosses,

and little wooden buttons trim the boots and trousers.

No time to focus this photograph, he went sideways a moment after the shutter did its thing.

Enjoy the rest of the holday.

Little Boy Blue

A big thank you for visiting my space today, I really do appreciate your visits.  My dear friend Nicole  (aka Cdeaca Crafts) left a lovely comment yesterday and it made me realise that I have not posted anything for quite some time.

I am so busy knitting at the moment I forget to share it with you, I am so sorry.  Here is a cardigan I made for my baby niece towards the end of last year - I have not had the opportunity to post it before now.

This is a very, very old Robin pattern, Bambino 2496, which I bought in a lot of second hand patterns.  To be honest the photograph on the front of the pattern is not very attractive and you could not see the design very clearly but I am so pleased I did not dismiss it because, as you can see,  it is a very pretty design.  I made the cardigan in Baby Double Knit - I think it is a lot softer than ordinary Double Knit.

Thank you so much for visiting today.

Easter Bunnies

Hello everyone.  First I must apologies to you all for being absent for so long.  I have not been ill or anything like that, just very, very busy knitting.  I have quite a few soft toys waiting in the wings to share with you, I just need to put the needles down long enough to write a few posts.  However, I was determined to find the time for this post this weekend because they are my Easter Bunnies.

I made one of theses for each of my small nieces, they are from the 'Little Cotton Rabbits' range of patterns, which are available from Ravelry.

I just love their fluffy white tails, a little on the large side I guess but it is hard to make very tiny pom poms.

The dress patterns are also by Julie Williams

This little bunnie already has a name, she has been called 'Raspberry' by her new owner and her mum.  The rabbits body is made from Alpaca DK by Stylecraft and her dress is made of King Cole 4 ply cotton

I found the ears were a little too large when I made them to the pattern, so this bunny has lop eared.  Her body is also Stylecraft Alpaca DK and her dress is King Cole Gaza 4 ply cotton..

My last bunny today is made from pink Stylecraft Alpaca Tweed DK and once again the dress is made from King Cole Gaza 4 ply cotton.

I hope that you have had a fabulous Easter and I apologise if I owe you an email or have not been around to your blog recently, I will try to get to you very soon.
